Trinamool Congress MP and veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha on Tuesday had lauded Uttarakhand's pioneering move to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) but also cautioned that its nationwide enforcement will require attention to address existing gaps and challenges.

Referring to the ban on non-vegetarian food, the actor-politician said that although he supports such a move, it would be difficult to implement it in some parts of the country.

As reported by news agency ANI, he said, "Not just beef, but non-veg food in general must be banned in the country. The governments have banned beef in many places, but in several areas, it’s still legal. People can eat it openly in the Northeast, but not in North India."

While describing the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand as commendable, Sinha cautioned against its nuances. He said that there are loopholes in the Uniform Civil Code. This is a major promise of the BJP, under which there is a provision of the same law for all religious communities in matters like marriage, divorce, succession, adoption, etc.

"In a similar way, there are many fine prints and loopholes in the UCC. An all-party meeting must be held before drafting UCC provisions," Sinha added, as quoted by ANI.

UCC In Uttarakhand

On January 27, Uttarakhand became the first state to implement a Uniform Civil Code since India's independence. The Uttarakhand Civil Code makes registration mandatory for all marriages as well as live-in relationships.

Its key provisions include equal property rights for sons and daughters, equal grounds for divorce, and legitimacy for children born out of live-in relationships.

The Pushkar Dhami-led BJP government has introduced an online portal to streamline the registration of marriages, divorces, and inheritance.

Shatrughan Sinha’s remark came as Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Tuesday announced setting up a five-member panel to prepare the draft for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and make the law.

“A five-member committee under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai has been constituted," Patel said on Tuesday.

The committee will submit its report to the state government in 45 days, based on which the government will take a decision.
